Who We Are
The FSC is an international, membership-based, non-profit organization that supports environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world's forests.

The FSC was founded in 1993 in Toronto, Canada by representatives from environmental groups, the timber industry, the forestry profession, Aboriginal organizations, and community forestry groups from 26 countries. Since inception, the organization’s membership has grown to comprise more than 640 members from 70 countries. FSC operates through its network of National Initiatives in 50 countries.

There are over 100 million hectares in some 80 countries certified according to FSC standards, and thousand of products are produced using FSC certified fibre and carrying the FSC trademark.

Forest Management Standards Development
Principles and Criteria for forest management set the threshold for defining good forest management around the world. However, regional standards must also be developed to reflect local ecological, social and economic factors while adhering to FSC Principles and Criteria. For this reason, FSC supports the development of regional standards for use in certification assessments in that region.

FSC Canada convenes representatives of all four Chambers (Aboriginal Peoples, Economic, Environmental, Social) to develop regional forest management standards that represent the ecology and social circumstances of a particular geographical area.

In Canada there are four regional forest management standards:

  • National Boreal Standard
  • British Columbia Standard
  • Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Standard
  • Maritimes Standard

Resources and Training
FSC Canada provides learning resources and delivers training workshops to improve the understanding and implementation of FSC certification in Canada. Resources are in the form of fact sheets, presentations, and online information and can all be found in our Resources Centre.

Market Development
As a voluntary and market-based mechanism for responsible forest management, FSC certification depends on there being both a supply and demand of FSC-certified products. FSC Canada hosts workshops, attends tradeshows and conferences, builds partnerships,
